Vor ein paar Tagen kam fĂĽr den VMWare ESX(i) 4.0 das lang erwartete Update 1 herraus, wichtige Punkte unter anderem der Support fĂĽr Windows 7 und Server 2008 R2 sowie ein unter Windows 7 funktionierender Client.
Das Client läuft jetzt zwar ohne dem bekannten Workaround direkt in Win7 allerdings nicht flüssig, der Seitenaufbau laggt genauso wie mit dem Workaround… Also im meinen Augen effektiv noch nicht unbedingt brauchbar, ich werde weiter die Installation in VMWare Workstation mit XP nutzen da es deutlich flüssiger läuft.
Was nicht in den Releasenotes steht mir aber sehr viel Freude bereitet ist das der ESXi jetzt in Verbindung mit meinem ASUS KFSN4-DRE startet 🙂
Bisher gab es nur ein Pink Screen of Death bei der „Loading Timings“ Bootstelle aber jetzt fährt er ohne zu murren hoch und funktioniert. Somit werde ich das Board behalten und mir noch nochmal ein ESXi hinstellen, fĂĽr die Zukunft ist dann das Upgrade auf volle 32GB Ram und 2x Shanghai-Opterons geplant da das Board diese voll unterstĂĽtzt, inkl. SplitPowerPlane.
Der einzige wehrmutstropfen ist nur noch das der ESXi leider den Onboard SATA Controller des nForce 2200 nicht erkennt, dem wird aber mit einem Intel SAS Controller mit voll unterstĂĽtztem LSI 1068e Chip Abhilfe geschaffen.

Gratuliere zum lauffähigen ESXi, überleg mir das daheim auch schon mir nen ESXi aufzusetzen und ausserm Fileserver (der ja bald sein neues Zuhause in einem deiner 4 HE Chenbro Gehäuse finden in meinem wird und ins Rack wandert) alles zu virtualisieren was da drauf eigentlich nichts zu suchen hat oder einfach lieber seperat laufen sollte.

I don’t speak german, but from what the translator said you succeeded with installing esxi 4.0 update 1 on the KFSN4-DRE.
I have this mother board, and I continually get the PURPLE SCREEN OF DEATH.
Did you have to adjust anything in the bios to make it work?

Thats right, it worked with the ESXi 4.0 U1 installed on a IDE Flash Modul because SATA Disks aren’t recognised by the ESXi.
The Flashmodul uses the Embedded Image from the Installerdisk, i flashed it into another PC which was previously the ESXi Server.
BIOS was set to default.

Sadly no way to get the controller running, there are no drivers in the ESXi.
You need to add an supported storage controller (LSI 1068 is the cheapest way with SAS support i think) or connect the storage via iSCSI or NFS over lan.

Sag mal, dass mit den KĂĽhlern auf dem KFSN4-DRE sieht ein wenig knapp aus oder? Hab mir gerade auch ein KFSN4-DRE zugelegt und bin mich nach passenden KĂĽhlern am umsehen. Gefallen wĂĽrden mir die beiden Zalmans aber schon sehr (sind das 9500er?)

Jop, sind 2x CNPS-9500er und knapp ist untertrieben, sie sind leicht ineinander verschoben und da die Sockel nicht 100% auf einer Linie sind muss man ggf bissl fummeln das sich der 2te auch drehen kann.
Um 90° gedreht passt leider garnicht.
Hi, can I ask you if you apply a particular setting under bios for IDE?
I have also a KFSN4-DRE SAS, so no problem with the LSI controller but I tried to use the IDE one with an IDE to CF adapter and the system wont boot from it also if this is the only boot device.
The installation in the CF modul works like a charm but no bott from it.
Can you tell me if in the BIOS under IDE setting you let all the option by default (Auto) or if you change something?
